Sparrow Foot Farm is a small‐scale market garden run by Inés Santos and David Simmons on the hills of Franklin, a small town in southern Tasmania.
What started as an empty paddock is now 1 acre of veggie beds and polytunnels that feed somewhere between 15-20 local families weekly, supply the farmer's market and a few small businesses in the area.
After learning from a few other veggie growers in Australia, Inés and David created Sparrow Foot Farm in 2022 and are now both full time doing what they love - growing food for the community. The market garden follows regenerative farming techniques and organic practices to grow nutrient-dense vegetables. Although not organically certified, these veggies are grown with the same standards (if not higher!) - Inés & David believe that getting to know your growers is far better than any certification. Chemical-free, grown in soil, minimal tillage and lots of compost!
Building soil health, enhancing biodiversity on the property and creating community around what happens in the paddocks is something Sparrow Foot Farm tries to achieve every season.
On the farm you'll find a very small flock of mixed breed chickens roaming around, producing eggs that are also sold direct to consumers.
After trying a few different sales avenues, Sparrow Foot Farm has found a good balance - since joining Ooooby Inés and David have been able able to supply their closer community with veggie boxes in a much more efficient way, direct customers to a website and list products when there is a surplus; while the Farmer's Market once a week gives Inés & David the opportunity to talk face to face to a lot of their customers, hear feedback and tips and tricks.
